Prior to recent years of design studio teachings and concurrent academic research in Hong Kong and its Greater Bay Area, Dr. Alex Zipprich has worked as an architect on a variety of international design projects, including university campus design projects, museum and art-galleries, as well as urban design and master-planning concepts. In the role of design architect and through a diverse range of collaborations, including for example joint-ventures with offices of Fumihiko Maki and Ricardo Legorreta via Shah Kawasaki Architects in California, Alex contributed in a variety of cultural settings and distinct cities such as Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Originally from Germany, Alex obtained his professional qualifications as an architect in Germany and the United Kingdom prior to pursuing graduate studies at Harvard University and subsequent PhD research in Hong Kong. Alex has been awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture in 2016. Dr. Zipprich has been teaching as Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Shenzhen University (SZU), as Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and as Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Throughout professional practice and academic teaching, Alex has continuously been exploring new technologies and their impacts on architecture and the design of cities. Broadly interested in the social dimensions and constituents of spatial forms in architecture and in urban planning, Alex’s lectures and conference presentations have been on topics such as designing for academic communities, campus planning, sustainable architecture, and on future visions in architecture and for the city. Connected to surrounding waters, Alex regularly windsurfs, swims, and maintains his rowing fitness since joining the university rowing team.
