Professor Cheung was educated as a mechanical engineer and a fire safety expert. Before joining the academia in 1988, he had gained profound experience of over 10 years in contracting and consulting practice in a large air conditioning company and leading consulting firms in Hong Kong. During this period of professional building services engineer life, he worked on 200 projects in Hong Kong and Asia and established close professional design and management contracts with architects.

Many of these projects are renowned buildings of international repute, complicated and prestigious in nature, fostering Professor Cheung on holistic and integrated insights into various building aspects.

He integrates building services and sustainable building technology into teaching studio design of architecture students. He teaches students to optimized design options in a holistic sustainable manner, optimizing environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainable in designs.

He researches and publishes on fire safety for tall and complex buildings, sustainable building technology & sustainable building services, solar building technology and tools such as heliodons, heliostats, solar reflectors, sunlight simulation tool,   and underground+aboveground sustainable city planning & design.

He holds three patents on solar technology and fire engineering. He recently received a first-class prize in his outstanding paper in National Fire Safety Conference of China, held in Nanjing, Nov 2016.
