Alvin KUNG was educated at UC Berkeley and Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, Barcelona, before his Master at CUHK. He received numerous design recognition, including First Prize (Student), FuturArc Prize 2010; CreateSmart Young Design Talent Award 2016; HKIA Young Architect Award 2018; A&D 40 under 40 Award 2021; BIM Elite Award (Visual Programming), BIM Automation Arena 2023 and Third Prize (Professional), FuturArc Prize 2023.

With diverse working experience, from international office in Copenhagen and top locals in HK, Alvin is keen on designing with social and technological impact; creating for society and future generations.

Since 2013, Soundscape, Tamar Park, has brought him the Gold at the Design for Asia Awards, and opened his door to public space design. Netscape was the first large-scale beach installation in Hong Kong, at Clear Water Bay in 2017. He then won competition, by the HK Government for public furniture Urban Railization, an experimental prototype of mundane infrastructure, opened in summer 2018.

While architecture cannot satisfy his vision to the betterment of public place, Alvin becomes a lecturer cum professional consultant in Landscape Architecture, HKDI, since 2016. With the team and as individual artist, the pavilions and landscape with cultural themes were installed in Yim Tin Tsai and Ha Tsuen. Contributing for the first Art Island project in HK, Yim Tin Tsai Arts Festival 2019 to 2021, Alvin has completed artwork Wall of Sanctification. Both his permanent and temporary works were showcased in symposiums and exhibitions in Vienna, Barcelona, Berkeley, Tokyo, Taipei, Shenzhen, etc.

Building Information Modelling is another skill sets of Kung, who was the key player and leader in BIM Awards 2011 and 2015 subsequently, let alone individual achievement of Young BIMer of the Year 2014, HKCIC. Alvin is in the Assessment & Examination Committee, HKIBIM from 2017 and is currently the Assessors for both the CIC-Accredited BIM Manager and HKIA BIM Accreditation.

Launched in 2016, City Gem is exhibited artwork and accessory brand, inspired by architecture with endangered criteria and social meanings. This has been shortlisted in Golden Pin Design Award. By the same 3D-printing technique and miniature concept, Life in the Cells is displayed in Hong Kong Pavilion, Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition 2018.

To promote our ambitions of Hong Kong’s architectural practitioners, Alvin led the curatorial team for HK Exhibition at London Festival of Architecture 2019. It was HKIA’s first-ever participation in this world’s largest annual architecture festival. The exhibition, involving dialogues between the experienced and emerging practices, at the Building Centre, London was delivered in style despite the mere three-month preparation, highly celebrating both the curators’ and exhibitors’ HK spirits of efficiency, effectiveness and adaptability.

Alvin has committed to a social engagement and research, conducted by the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, since 2018. Participatory symposia and workshops open to the public to collect views on social issues, facilitate discussion to co-create possibilities to deliver sizeable amount of Transitional Social Housing. The outcome of this symposium episode was published in 2020.
